一、a number of ; the number of

[点拨] a number of 表示“一些”、“若干”之意。它是一个作定语用的固定词组，修饰后面的复数名词或代词。当它作主语时，谓语动词通常用复数。the
number of表示“……的数量（数目）”之意。介词of同其后面的名词构成介词短语，作定语修饰the number。当它作主语时，谓语动词通常用单数。
二、a great deal of ; a great/good many ; a lot of/lots of/plenty of
